About the GP-9's
The CQPA's GP-9's were built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors. EMD specified this model as GP-9 ("General Purpose").  They were designed so they could do any work, anywhere, singly or in multiple.

Under the long hood is a V16 (16 cylinders), 2-stroke, diesel engine of GM design, 16 feet long, 7 feet tall, 6 foot wide, weighing 26,000 pounds.  Its piston displacement is 567 cubic inches per cylinder.  It develops 1,750 horsepower at a maximum of 850 rpm.  It is directly connected to a 720 kW DC generator, 6 feet in diameter.  Direct current from it is fed to tour 430-hp electric motors, about the size of card tables.  One motor is geared to each axle.  The motors weigh about 6,000 pounds each.  We have, in essence, an electric transmission.   The generator, mounted on the diesel engine's rear is located toward the cab, and the engine occupies the center behind the big GT.  In front of the engine are mounted the accessories, such as oil cooler, (250 gallons of lube oil are required,) airbrake pump, radiator tank (260 gallons of cooling water), fuel oil pump and various filters. Fuel consumption is approximately 5 gallons per hour at an idle speed of 150 rpm.  It increases according to the work applied to the locomotive.

There are 4 radiators mounted along the roofline, two on each end of the long hood.  The fuel tank is suspended between the wheelsets (trucks).

Locomotive Horns: The horns are Leslie SuperTyphone 3 chime horns. that used to be used on all FEC engines untill the last few years, now there are Nathans in the mix also. As far as I know none of the GP-9r's recieved the Nathans.

In mid-September of 2002, Tim Robbins and the CQPA purchased and took delivery of 5 GP-9's from Florida East Coast Railways. 2 of the purchased units were rail capable upon delivery. The three others required minor work to make them rail worthy once again. All five units are in need of sandblasting and painting.

least 2 times, don't know this for sure
